Keita Bates-Diop has impressed coach Gregg Popovich and the Spurs through the team’s first two preseason games, meaning the forward may have finally found an NBA home in San Antonio.Ninety minutes before the Spurs opened their preseason at Houston last week, coach Gregg Popovich rattled off his starting lineup for a collection of inquiring minds in the media.“I’ve got to think of one more,” Popovich said.
“After a couple of years, you’ve kind of figured things out,” said Bates-Diop, who is in his third training camp with the Spurs. “The first year is kind of hard no matter where you go. After a few years, I’m comfortable here.” “He is one of those guys who has to believe that he belongs and that helps him to improve and become more demanding of himself on the court,” Popovich said.
At 6-foot-8 and with arms that stretch from the AT&T Center to Cibolo, Bates-Diop has proven to be a versatile defender who fits well next to center Jakob Poeltl and can guard multiple positions. He worked with then-shooting coach Chip Engelland on his mechanics. After Engelland left for Oklahoma City last month, Bates-Diop continued with the tweaks.
