Liang began taking dance lessons, he said, “to not get in trouble while I was waiting for my sister during ballet classes.”“I didn’t fully understand this , but it was the marriage of music, a challenge, physicality,” Liang said., Liang had attained a reputation as a dancer of artistry and strength and a choreographer of imagination and resourcefulness. Those credentials were evident to Porter, who co-chaired BalletMet’s search committee.
During the previous nine seasons, Liang has reinvigorated BalletMet’s roster, adding new dancers on a yearly basis as existing company members retire or move on; among the 26 dancers who currently make up BalletMet, all but two were hired by Liang.
