Edwaard Liang's dance résumé includes stints in New York and The Netherlands before landing in Columbus, where he's led BalletMet going on 10 seasons.
“He is such a constant learner,” Porter said. “He has evolved into what I consider just an amazing leader and partner to me.”But Liang doesn’t stay put in BalletMet’s headquarters on Mount Vernon Avenue.
Liang began taking dance lessons, he said, “to not get in trouble while I was waiting for my sister during ballet classes.”“I didn’t fully understand this , but it was the marriage of music, a challenge, physicality,” Liang said., Liang had attained a reputation as a dancer of artistry and strength and a choreographer of imagination and resourcefulness. Those credentials were evident to Porter, who co-chaired BalletMet’s search committee.
During the previous nine seasons, Liang has reinvigorated BalletMet’s roster, adding new dancers on a yearly basis as existing company members retire or move on; among the 26 dancers who currently make up BalletMet, all but two were hired by Liang.
