Lift is out in select theaters now.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Lift, a documentary about the power of dance, was recently acquired by Paramount and debuts today in select theaters before hitting digital platforms on September 22. The beloved ballerina Misty Copeland executive produces and serves as principal advisor for the movie, which follows a group of children impacted by homelessness as they learn to express themselves through dance.
Though Melendez is an important part of the story, Lift focuses on the students as well. Specifically, Victor Abreu, Yolanssie Cardona, and Sharia Blockwood — all promising young ballet dancers whose housing insecurity causes their futures to look less bright than they should. Having grown up in poverty himself, Melendez reaches out by teaching the workshop, allowing him to connect with students through dance and help them fight their circumstances.
Lift was filmed over ten years, and it paints a clearer picture of homelessness in America than many are willing to recognize. Steven's own trauma is also treated with respect as he attempts to help others out of the struggles that he previously experienced — though his world and passions may at first seem inaccessible to his students.
Lift premieres is select theaters on September 15 and will be available to rent or buy on Digital on September 22.
