Brands like Prada & Balenciaga are taking their designs to the Metaverse.
has been grounded in the experimental and exceptional—clothing unbound by the laws of conventional physics. But your avatar is about to get a big—and quite realistic—style upgrade courtesy of Meta and Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne. The three brands will launch garments for Meta Avatars for purchase in the Meta shop soon, and remember Meta owns not just Facebook, but Instagram and Messenger, too.
“Its been a long year working on something that’s really, truly been a passion project,” said Eva Chen, the head of fashion partnerships at Meta. Joined on Instagram live by Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, Chen unveiled each potential new look on a print-out for Zuckerberg to respond to, showcasing how seamlessly runway fashion could translate to Meta avatars. “This is probably the only fashion show that I will ever be near,” said the founder with a laugh.
Of Prada’s white Linea Rossa nylon ensemble, which Chen mocked up on Zuckerberg’s avatar, he said: “It does take a certain confidence to wear shoulders-to-toes Prada. I think in the metaverse I may just have that confidence.” If Zuckerberg were to ever wear a suit, he guarantees that it would be a Thom Browne, with its sporty stripes and buttoned-up fit.
Meta’s avatar shop is expected to launch soon and will include creator-designed items alongside those of global fashion brands.
