Rural Baldwin County residents are concerned about additional solar projects on the horizon. A 4,500-acre site near Stockton kickstarted the pushback and public awareness.show two other requests from solar farm developers to connect to the grid.
One is in the Tensaw area, another is east of Bay Minette. Meagan Fowler, Friends of Tensaw River President, says in total that's 10,000 acres in proposed solar farms. "Regardless of whether this is currently active or not, it's clear evidence that Baldwin County has a target on its back. And there are these companies that have no connection to the state of Alabama whatsoever, and they're coming in, and they're not concerned about our ecosystem, our environment, our communities. So we're about to lose something really special if we can't get a grasp on this," said Fowler. Fowler says communities don't get a heads up because the land is not zoned. She says 1,000 signatures were turned in to the probate court on Friday - in one of the first steps to bring zoning to the Stockton area. Fowler says similar efforts are coming to Tensaw and Rabun.that would temporarily prohibit the construction of solar farms in Alabama for one year.
