The Baldwin County Commission is pleased to announce that construction is officially underway on a new segment of the Eastern Shore Trail along U.S. Highway 98, further enhancing connectivity and recreational opportunities within Baldwin County.
The project includes the construction of an 8-foot-wide asphalt multi-use trail extending approximately 1.84 miles, beginning at Fish River. The new segment is part of the broader Eastern Shore Trail system, which currently spans approximately 23 miles. With the completion of this 1.84-mile extension, the trail network will grow to nearly 24.8 miles, further strengthening regional connectivity. This project represents the next step in expanding the trail system to better connect communities throughout Baldwin County, including enhanced access toward Magnolia Springs. As Baldwin County continues to experience steady growth, expanding the Eastern Shore Trail strengthens regional connectivity while providing a safer, dedicated space for pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-motorized users along one of the county’s most traveled corridors. This investment supports alternative transportation options, encourages healthy lifestyles, and enhances economic vitality across the Eastern Shore. With a total project budget of $2 million, the trail will be constructed entirely within the existing U.S. 98 right-of-way, minimizing environmental impacts and avoiding the need for additional property acquisition. McElhenney Construction was awarded the contract and has mobilized crews to begin initial construction activities. The project is expected to reach completion in Summer 2026. Funding for this project was secured through the efforts of former U.S. Representative Jerry Carl, who represented Alabama’s 1st Congressional District at the time the funds were appropriated. This federal investment reflects a continued commitment to improving infrastructure and quality of life in Baldwin County. The new segment is part of the broader Eastern Shore Trail system, which aims to create a connected network for walking and biking throughout the region. As Baldwin County continues to experience steady growth, projects like this one help promote alternative transportation options, encourage healthy lifestyles, and support tourism and local businesses.Additional updates will be provided as construction progresses. Residents are encouraged to use caution in work zones and follow posted signage for their safety and the safety of construction crews.Nine people were shot in two separate shootings in downtown Mobile Sunday night, hours after nearly 120,000 people attended Joe Cain Day parades.
