‘Back to the Future’ finds new life onstage at the Winter Garden Theater—stars Casey Likes and Roger Bart and writer Bob Gale speak to VF about the “sense of responsibility” that comes with revamping a beloved classic.
Marty McFly was ready to hop on a skateboard and escape the wrath of Biff Tannen—but first, he had to get his cell phone out of his pocket.Back to the Future
musical were gearing up for a run-through of “There’s Something About That Boy,” the big number that closes the first act. It’s an athletic, dazzling production, with Likes’s Marty dashing across the stage and on top of a row of lockers, outrunning the bully Biff and his gang. The scene ends in Biff’s defeat and Lorraine —Marty’s mom, though she doesn’t know it—more smitten by him than ever.
Sound familiar? It’s a stage-ready riff on one of the film’s many famous scenes, where Marty more or less invents the skateboard so that he can outrun Biff in his car. In a musical that contains so much of the original movie, right down to the actors’ line readings, why incorporate such a dramatic change? Well, for starters, when casting Marty, “We can’t expect that we can get somebody who’s under 25 years old who can sing, dance, act, and skateboard.
“I’m 72 years old, and I’m having the best third act that anybody could ask for,” he says later. “I am living a dream that I never even had.” Likes and Hunt spend some time working on the choreography for “Pretty Baby,” a 1950s girl-group-style number for when Marty wakes up in Lorraine’s bedroom and meets a younger version of his mother trying to seduce him.
