Phair, a rising sophomore at the Pingry School, came in as a substitute for South Korea in their 2-0 loss to Colombia.
She had an opportunity to attend a camp for both the U.S. national team and the South Korean equivalent but flourished in the latter, her father said, and in June earned an invitation to the team’s World Cup camp. From there, head coach Colin Bell said she earned a spot on the 23-player roster and made it clear she wasn’t going to be a “passenger” as the team attempted to advance in the event for the first time.
Now, she’s been a player — the youngest ever. Phair hasn’t worried about making history before the event, insisting that her only goals were to improve as a player and to help South Korea win games. But she admitted the prospects of playing in the same event as stars she grew up idolizing was “really cool.”
