Canterbury’s win over Canberra at their spiritual home on Sunday provided not just another two competition points, but also a vital, twice-yearly communion with their community.

In the NRL, absence often makes the heart grow fonder. Canterbury play just two games a year at Belmore Sportsground, and those dates are circled on the calendar by eager Bulldogs fans at the start of the season.over the Raiders at their spiritual home which took them another step closer to finals football, coach Cameron Ciraldo sat down in the cramped Sydney Olympic Football Club office commandeered for the press conference and spoke of the club’s pride in playing at Belmore.

Ciraldo didn’t grow up in Belmore. He played his junior football for Menai Roosters, before going on to represent the Sharks, Knights and Panthers. But after arriving at the Bulldogs last year, Ciraldo studied the club’s history in detail, especially its connection to the local area, inspiring his players to do the same.

The tented merchandise outlet was doing impressive business in huge Josh Addo-Carr and Stephen Crichton heads at $35 each. The purchases proved a sound investment given both players scored two tries each on their return from injury, but it was captain Crichton who gave fans most reason to believe their team will enjoy more memorable games this season.

After the game, Crichton spoke of his desire “to make our community proud”, understanding the need to put on a memorable performance at a suburban ground bulging at the seams with 18,110 fans and rocking to the beat of drums across the hill.
