Two former building watchdogs have rubbished claims Labor governments were unaware of behaviour inside the CFMEU: “Thuggery and standover tactics have prevailed for decades.”
Two former Australian Building and Construction Commission bosses have rubbished claims by the Victorian and other Labor governments that they were unaware of CFMEU thuggery, and backed the immediate return of the watchdog with increased powers.
He said claims by Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan that her government was unaware of the union’s alleged links to criminals and bikies, and of its thuggish behaviour,He said a government “prepared to take a tough line” and giving the ABCC powers to conduct compulsory interviews were important. In the past, witnesses were too easily intimidated from testifying.
“The culture that is currently being exposed is nothing new. Thuggery and standover tactics have prevailed for decades,” he said.“If the CFMEU remains registered then this union will continue to be exempt from taxation and its officials will continue to terrorise building sites under the guise of workplace safety.
He cited one matter pursued by the ABCC in which the Federal Court hit the CFMEU with a $177,000 fine for unlawful blockades of a children’s hospital on four separate days, including on one occasion when around 400 people blockaded the entrance preventing a concrete pour involving 45 trucks.
“So in terms of needing someone with criminal experience, I would put to you that we already have state and federal-based police agencies who have those powers to be able to investigate criminal matters put to them.”
