A veteran San Diego State team takes on the youthful Bluejays in the NCAA Tournament
They are from different parts of the country, one next to an ocean, the other more than 1,000 miles away in either direction. One wears red and black, the other blue and white. One has a mascot derived from the Aztec empire, the other has a bird. One plays in the Mountain West, the other in the Big East.But San Diego State and Creighton, for all their cosmetic differences, are largely the same basketball team. You’ve seen one, you’ve seen the other.
“We’re thrilled to be here,” McDermott was saying on the elevated dais that the NCAA uses for news conferences at the tournament. “This probably wasn’t in the cards in the middle of November or middle of December, maybe even in the middle of January. But this team has just continued to improve. They’ve continued to develop an unbelievable connection that I think is the biggest reason that I’m sitting here today.
SDSU found itself at Colorado State on Feb. 4, a game it ultimately lost 58-57 on a controversial non-call at the buzzer. But the Aztecs were down 20 with 10 minutes to go, mounted a furious comeback, briefly took the lead and discovered something. They closed the season 11-2, with both losses by a point against Boise State.
The NCAA Tournament is just … different. From the longer media timeouts, to the bizarre pulpits from which interviews are conducted, to the charter flights jammed with bands, cheerleaders and overly rah-rah administrators, to the police escorts to arenas, to the open practice in front of fans, to the strict rules , to the unique pressure from a 30-game season defined by one.
