With so many wonderful residents doing so many great things in the Avon Lake community and so many projects that serve the greater good, it’s difficult to choose just one in each category to receive the coveted honor of being named Citizen and Project of the Year, sponsored by the Avon Lake Community Council.

North Coast Rotary members received a donation of imperfect blankets and made a trip down to Groveport, Ohio to pick them up as a part of the Blankets for Bed program.After collecting nominations for more than two months, Community Council members recently announced the 2024 Avon Lake Citizen of the Year recipient is Carolyn Chatlos and the 2024 Projects of the Year winner is Blankets for Bed.

The Citizen of the Year and Project of the Year recognition program will be held at 6 p.m. May 23 at the Avon Lake Public Library - Waugaman Gallery, 32649 Electric Blvd. This event is open to the public and guests can RSVP by emailing O’Donnell atby May 20. Salad KraZe, Avon Lake Boat Club, Avon Lake Kiwanis, and the North Coast Rotary are providing light food, refreshments, and supplies for the award program attendees.

Items acceptable for shredding include bank information and canceled checks, outdated bills, medical information, obsolete invoices, mortgage and loan information, letters, envelopes, ledgers and other clean paper documents.Musicians and instrumentalists are wanted to participate in the annual Make Music Avon Lake event June 21.

This month is also the start of the seasonal open houses at the 5064 Jaycox Road District #9 Schoolhouse. Built in 1859 as a one-room schoolhouse, the building has been preserved by the society for visitors to see how education took place back in the 1800s. The schoolhouse will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. May 26,, and the last Sunday of each month until October. Onsite parking is limited, but nearby side street parking is available.
