DFW is getting a new direct route to Bogotá, Colombia, via the country’s flag carrier Avianca Airlines.

Bogotá-based Avianca Airlines will start the four-times weekly flights in May from DFW to El Dorado International Airport, the carrier said in a statement on Monday.Bogotá is Colombia’s capital and largest city, and the third largest city in South America behind São Paulo, Brazil and Lima, Peru.“We are excited to give travelers a new way to reach Bogotá from Dallas, adding to our 21 routes between the U.S.

By attracting flights from a foreign carrier not connected to American Airlines, the Colombia addition is a rare grab for DFW Airport. Avianca is a part of theThe new Avianca flight will be the seventh route to South America from DFW Airport this summer. American operates all the other routes to the destinations of Bogotá, Santiago, São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Rio De Janeiro. American only operates the Bogota and Santiago flights year-round.
