Voters are being asked to approve a property tax increase to fund public schools. They say the future of education in the county is at stake.
) - Autauga County Schools launched a public information campaign Friday.
That crucial moment comes Tuesday, Nov. 5 when Autauga county voters will choose whether to support an ad valorem property tax increase. Woodfin says the system needs more funding to secure its future. The school system is asking neighbors to approve an increase of 7 mill. This would bring in an additional $7 million to the school system. The superintendent says a “yes” vote would allow them to hire additional teachers, enhance security, and renovate aging buildings. A “no” vote would force them to make difficult decisions, which may include closing schools, reducing school athletics and fine arts support, or employee layoffs.
An increase of 7 mills would add $210 in property taxes to a 300,000 home. Educators and local leaders believe its a small price to pay for students in the district.
