After 40 years of improving life expectancy, the wave of COVID-19 deaths has caused a fall in life expectancy.

Life expectancy in Australia has gone backwards for the first time in over 40 years, caused by over 10,000 COVID-19 deaths last year.

Ms Cho said the first two years of the pandemic had the two lowest mortality rates on record from all causes. Ms Cho said this is because over half of all deaths in 2022 were of people aged 80 years and over.“Despite slightly lower life expectancy in Australia, it’s still higher than before the pandemic and continues to be one of the highest in the world, ranked third behind Monaco and Japan according to United Nations’ estimates,” Ms Cho said.Advertisement
