Spy chief Mike Burgess says his comments on people fleeing Gaza have been misrepresented after the last parliamentary sitting week was dominated by a political fight over whether Palestinian refugees should be allowed into Australia.Last month, Burgess gave an interview on ABC Insiders and said if Palestinians fleeing Gaza expressed “rhetorical support” for Hamas, but didn’t support its ideology, it is not a problem for them to come to Australia.
“I’ve watched with interest over the last couple of weeks how people have chosen to distort what I said,” Burgess told ABC.“I said that if you support a Palestinian homeland that may not discount you because that by itself is not a problem.“But I also said if you have a violent extremist ideology, or you provide material or financial support to a terrorist organisation, that will be a problem.
