Spy chief Mike Burgess says his comments on people fleeing Gaza have been misrepresented after the last parliamentary sitting week was dominated by a political fight over whether Palestinian refugees should be allowed into Australia.Last month, Burgess gave an interview on ABC Insiders and said if Palestinians fleeing Gaza expressed “rhetorical support” for Hamas, but didn’t support its ideology, it is not a problem for them to come to Australia.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton later declared that no Palestinians should be let into the country and placed blame on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for failing to manage Australia’s national security.In an interview with ABC’s 7.30, Burgess clarified his comments this week, saying he was misrepresented.“I’ve watched with interest over the last couple of weeks how people have chosen to distort what I said,” Burgess told ABC.
