Austin ISD is taking precautions to ensure student safety as winter weather approaches. The district has protocols in place to consult with local authorities and emergency management in case of inclement weather.

If you think it's going to be a cold, miserable morning at the bus stops on Tuesday... wait until later this week when it'sThe holidays are over and Austin ISD's nearly 74,000 students are heading back-to-school this week. The schools are hoping to avoid icy weather later this week, but they're ready. Austin ISD has about 500 buses transporting every school day. Their operations can be severely impacted when the roads turn treacherous. That's not expected today... and may not happen this week..

. but winter is just getting started. Superintendent Matias Segura says safety is always their first priority. And while Austin kids may enjoy the occasional 'snow day'-- or what passes for a snow day in Central Texas-- parents need the schools to stay open as much as possible because the essential workers among them aren't going to get the day off. So, these critical decisions impacting the school schedule aren't made in a bubble. Austin ISD protocols for inclement weather include consultations with local emergency management, law enforcement and others. Segura says, “We’re working with the City of Austin, we’re working with Travis County, we’re getting updates from the winter weather service,” and he adds, “It’s always very challenging. It’s one of those things we take very, very seriously. But at the end of the day, we want to make sure we provide a safe environment for all our students.” And working off lessons learned from winter storms in recent years, the district knows parents and other stakeholders want to be notified asap about any weather-related issues impacting their students. Austin ISD says if bad weather causes any cancellations or delays, families and staff will be notified by phone, email and/or text. Parents are advised to make sure their contact information on-file with your school is up to date., download their weather app and stay up to date on the forecast. Weather tends to vary a lot in the winter months
