The Alameda Unified School District’s classified employees include those who serve meals every school day to AUSD and charter school students. In the Alameda Unified School District’s last column, we at the AUSD announced that the district and the Alameda Education Association labor union had reached tentative agreements on salary, benefits and other contract considerations.
AUSD Notes: Name sought for new athletic field at Alameda’s Encinal High We’re happy to announce that the AUSD and its two Classified School Employees Association chapters also signed tentative agreements last week. Under the three-year agreement’s terms, members of CSEA 27 and CSEA-860 will receive a 10% salary increase over the next three years, plus a 2% bonus, as well as a 76% increase in the amount AUSD contributes to their health coverage. The negotiating teams also agreed on articles relating to hours and overtime, vacation, layoffs and professional growth. The next step is for the members of the two unions to ratify their tentative agreements. Once that is complete, the AUSD Board of Education will vote on whether to ratify the agreement. On March 21, AEF is hosting a poetry slam at Books Inc. from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Students are encouraged to write a poem on the theme of “Where I Live,” using local artist Alex D. da Silva’s paintings “Warriors” and “The Meanderings of a Watershed.” Students can learn more and register at On March 25, the Youth Advisory Committee of the Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth and their Families will host an open mic contest to commemorate the “Season for Nonviolence,” a 64-day period observed between the anniversaries of the deaths of Ghandi on Jan. 30 and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4. The event’s stated goal is to promote peace and nonviolence in Alameda. All ages of students are invited to present poetry, spoken word, music, speech, rap and other performance work on the theme of nonviolence. On April 1, the AUSD and city of Alameda will host the 10th Annual Alameda Youth Career & Job Fair from 1 to 5 p.m. at Encinal Junior and Senior High School.
