Two civil engineering professors at Auburn University have analyzed the collapse and made this a teachable moment for their students.
Civil engineering professors Matthew Yarnold and Andrzej Nowak have studied how the cargo ship hitting part of the Francis Scott Key Bridge would cause the entire structure to fall apart.
“The way the ship managed to proceed and impact the pier unfortunately missed the dolphins and hit one of the reinforced concrete supports,” Yarnold said. “This was almost like repetition of what happened then,” said Nowak. “The bridge type was similar, and the accident was similar.”
