Law enforcement agencies are likely pulling out all the stops in Acosta’s case, perhaps using a mix of analog and high-tech tactics, experts said. The suspect’s young age and the widespread attention on the case may prove helpful in finding him — whether he remains in North Texas or fled to another state or country, the experts said.
“Most of these kids are going to talk to someone and tell them what they’re doing,” he said. “This could have been a spontaneous incident, or it could have been a planned incident. Only the police have that kind of intelligence.” Petrowski cited cases like that of Brian Laundrie, who was on the lam for more than a month and suspected in the death of his fiancé Gabby Petito. The crime was shocking and sensational, Shook said, which meant it circulated nationwide. The fugitives were captured Jan. 22, 2001, after someone saw a feature about the case on America’s Most Wanted and tipped police off to their location. “Because of the facts of this particular crime, I think law enforcement will be relentless in searching for him,” Shook said. “I think it’ll stay in the public’s eye, and that’ll work in law enforcement’s favor eventually.”
