Authorities said the suspect shot a man who had attempted to de-escalate a dispute.
OAKLAND — A man with a history of unprovoked physical assaults on people has been charged with attempted murder in an Aug.15 shooting of a man in Oakland’s Lakeside Park, according to authorities and court documents.
King Jamil Stevenson, 29, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the attempted murder count and another charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing Sept. 19. An enhancement to the charges says Stevenson was on probation at the time of the shooting.Authorities said Stevenson, who police were told constantly bullied people around Lake Merritt, had gotten into a dispute with a person when a 33-year-old man confronted him and told him to leave people alone.
He was also facing three misdemeanor counts of assault, battery and elder abuse in another case linked to a Feb. 11 incident in Oakland’s Chinatown. According to court documents, Stevenson is accused of threatening a custodian at the Pacific Renaissance Plaza with a blunt object, and then, after leaving the complex, punching a 43-year-old man without provocation in the area and shoving that man’s 76-year-old father to the pavement when he tried to intervene.
