Federal prosecutors say Darrin Johnson, 26, of Cincinnati, threatened to kill the University of Cincinnati student and hit the student in the head.

CINCINNATI, Ohio — A man accused of attacking and threatening to kill an Asian-American college student in 2021 was arrested Thursday and charged with a federal hate crime.

Federal prosecutors say Darrin Johnson, 26, of Cincinnati, yelled at the University of Cincinnati student to “Go back to your country. ... You brought the kung flu here. … You’re going to die for bringing it.” Kung flu is a derogatory reference to the COVID-19 coronavirus. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio says the attack occurred on Aug. 17, 2021, on Calhoun Street, which is the southern border of the college campus.

In addition to threatening the student, authorities say Johnson punched the man in the side of the head, causing him to fall and hit his head on the bumper of a parked vehicle. The student suffered a minor concussion and cuts to his face, prosecutors say.Johnson faces a maximum of 10 years in prison if convicted of the federal hate crime charge.
