The Atlanta Braves wasted little time getting a replacement for Austin Riley who could be out for two months.
Gio Urshela, released on Sunday by the Tigers, is closing in on a major league agreement with the Braves, The Post has learned. Atlanta announced Monday that third baseman Austin Riley would be lost 6-8 weeks with a fractured right hand.Urshela was released by the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The timing couldn’t have been better for the Braves.
For his career, he’s batting .273 with a .730 OPS. He could benefit from a change of scenery to return closer to his familiar form, and he wouldn’t be the first to do that after arriving in Atlanta. The Braves see the recently released Urshela as a better option than some of the in-house ones. Nacho Alvarez Jr., who isn’t even a third baseman, isn’t ready. It doesn’t seem like they think their veteran third base options in Triple-A, such as Zack Short or Brian Anderson will contribute enough offensively either.
