AT&T acknowledged on Saturday that its networks were targeted in cyberattacks by the Chinese government, but stated that its US networks are now secure. AT&T acknowledged on Saturday that it was targeted in cyberattacks by the Chinese government, but said its U.S. networks are now secure. The company said in a statement that while the People's Republic of China targeted a small number of individuals of foreign intelligence interest, it detected no activity by nation-state actors in its networks at this time.
While only a few cases of compromised information were identified, AT&T was monitoring and remediating its networks to protect customers' data. This acknowledgment follows Friday's revelation by U.S. officials that a ninth unnamed telecom company had been compromised by the Salt Typhoon hackers, who gained broad and full access to networks, enabling them to geolocate millions of individuals and record phone calls at will. The U.S. Department of Defense and the Federal Communications Commission did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. China's foreign ministry could not immediately be contacted for comment
