The Astros slugger reported left hand soreness upon arriving at spring training last...

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Yordan Alvarez swung a bat on Friday for the first time this spring, starting a race against the calendar to be ready for opening day on March 30.

Alvarez hit soft toss in the batting cages at the team’s facility in West Palm Beach and, according to the team, “felt good” with “no issues.” Alvarez reported left hand soreness upon arriving at spring training last month. He’s been limited to light defensive work and conditioning ever since. Earlier this week, general manager Dana Brown said Alvarez felt “no pain” in his hand.

“We know it doesn’t take him long to get ready,” Brown said. “He’s a fierce competitor in the batter’s box. It’s just a matter of him being completely healthy. Hopefully we’re through the storm once he starts back swinging. I think he’s had the ample rest he needs.” Manager Dusty Baker did not offer a timetable for Alvarez’s next steps nor did the skipper speculate when he could make his Grapefruit League debut. After Friday’s game against the Mets, 16 Grapefruit League games remain on the Astros’ schedule before opening day.
