Before Hunter Brown’s moment arrived on Monday, he was determined not to allow it much fanfare. But when he took the mound at Minute Maid Park and delivered six shutout innings in his major league debut, the fanfare became impossible to delay or ignore.

HOUSTON, TEXAS - SEPTEMBER 05: Chas McCormick #20 of the Houston Astros reacts to Jose Altuve #27 running home during the eighth inning against the Texas Rangers at Minute Maid Park on September 05, 2022 in Houston, Texas. Before Hunter Brown’s moment arrived on Monday, he was determined not to allow it much fanfare. The actualization of his dream had seemed inevitable for some time now, as Brown bided his time the entire season at Class AAA Sugar Land and kept his weapons sharp.

Brown retired 17 of the 21 batters he faced in the Astros’ 1-0 win over the Rangers. He became the third Astros starting pitcher to toss at least six scoreless innings in their MLB debut, joining Carlos Hernandez on Aug. 18, 2001 versus Pittsburgh and Jarred Cosart on July 12, 2013 at Tampa Bay. Bryan Abreu, Héctor Neris and Rafael Montero each contributed a scoreless inning out of the Astros bullpen, but all eyes were on the rookie starter.

The Rangers went eight up, eight down against Brown before nine-hole hitter Bubba Thompson struck a two-out single in the top of the third. The Astros, though, caught Thompson stealing second base to end the frame. The play prompted Brown’s biggest display of emotion to that point, a clenched-jaw scream as he pounded his glove and strutted off the mound.
