ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 04: Yainer Diaz #63, Brandon Bielak #64, Jose Altuve #27, Yuli Gurriel #10, and Christian Vazquez #9 of the Houston Astros celebrate after their 9-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on September 04, 2022 in Anaheim, California. ANAHEIM, Calif. — The field felt like a furnace, conditions few enjoy but all must embrace. Only five games in the Astros’ 61-year existence were hotter than Sunday’s miserable matinee at Angel Stadium.
Urquidy sprinted through seven scoreless innings against a lifeless Angels lineup, allowing his teammates ample time in front of industrial fans in the comforts of a covered dugout. The performance propelled Houston to a 9-1, series-clinching win in two hours and 43 minutes. The Angels struck 17 balls in play against him that averaged an 85.8 mph exit velocity — weak contact that Houston’s defense converted into easy outs. Urquidy fell into a palpable rhythm after his first inning of work, due in one part to his style and another to the cushion his lineup provided.
