Astros owner Jim Crane content to skip big money, long-term deals even it means loss of some players

The Astros’ owner appears content with the contract philosophy that’s produced a dynasty — even if it could result in defections.
“I’m not saying it’s something we would never do, but we’ve done well by constructing the team the way we have and doing some extensions from time to time when it makes sense.” Discussions with all of the Astros’ extension candidates are paused during the regular season, Brown said. The team negotiated with Tucker and starter Framber Valdez during spring training but did not come close to agreements with either.
