City-wide discourse may disagree, but count Jim Crane among those that appreciate the World Baseball Classic, even if it injured the face of his franchise. Jose Altuve’s fractured right thumb “is just part of the risk,” Crane said on Thursday.
“I think it’s great for baseball to get that global attention and see all those teams fired up to play and the crowds that are there,” Crane said. “It’s good for the game.”. Insurance from Major League Baseball will cover Altuve’s salary during the time he misses.
“It’s going to happen. We kind of got caught by surprise with that,” Crane said. “I think maybe they move the dates, maybe they limit the amount of players that have to go from a particular team. You just hope everyone comes out of there but unfortunately we didn’t. We have to live with it.” Crane said the league has discussed moving the tournament, but acknowledged problems with all of the possible dates — be it after the playoffs or before spring training even begins. Houston had 11 players on its 40-man roster participate in the tournament.
“I think it makes a little bit more sense to play it later, but you could also see there’s other variables there with TV,” Crane said. “It comes down to a bunch of things, but I think they’ll address those.”
