Houston Astros outfielder Michael Brantley ground ball practice during the first full squad workout at the Astros spring training complex at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023 in West Palm Beach .SUGAR LAND — The Astros expect to be without Michael Brantley until at least late April, general manager Dana Brown acknowledged before his team’s exhibition against the Class AAA Sugar Land Space Cowboys on Monday.
It was expected that the 35-year-old left fielder, who missed most of last season with a labral tear in his right shoulder, would start the season on the injured list, but the initial hope was that it would be a shorter stint. “Initially, we thought maybe mid-April, but maybe we’re leaning a week later than that,” Brown said. “He’s feeling pretty good. He’s hitting. He’s getting his days off that he needs. We’re not going to rush him because it’s a long season, 162 . We figure when we want him to come back, we want him to be fully healthy. We have some backup, so we feel comfortable. We can’t wait to get him back, but we’re not going to rush him.
Brantley will be with the Astros to be part of the World Series celebration on Thursday and Friday, but then will return to the team’s spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Fla., to continue to prepare for the season."I'd rather have Michael Brantley for five months than Michael Brantley for no months," Baker said.
Along with Brantley, outfielders Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker have been dealing with their own injury issues, but both are getting better, according to Baker. Alvarez, who battled hand soreness much of spring training, will be ready for opening day. He started in left field against the Space Cowboys and was slated to play the full nine innings. Right fielder Kyle Tucker sprained his ankle in the World Baseball Classic, but returned to play in Sunday's final spring training game.
