OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA - JULY 09: Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker Jr. argues with home plate umpire Ben May #97 during the eighth inning of their game against the Oakland Athletics at RingCentral Coliseum on July 09, 2022 in Oakland, California. OAKLAND, Calif. — The Astros entered Saturday’s eighth inning trailing by one run and with one of its hottest hitters arriving at the plate as the potential catalyst for a rally.
Martín Maldonado began the day batting .333 in July with three home runs and a 1.250 OPS in eight games this month. He had mashed a three-run homer against the A’s on. In his current position, leading off the eighth against a fresh arm in A’s reliever Zach Jackson, a well-timed swing or patiently drawn walk could roll the lineup around and set the table for Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez to hit with runners on.
Instead, Maldonado struck out and Astros manager Dusty Baker was ejected while arguing the call, moving the Astros one out closer toMaldonado and Baker both said they thought strikes one and three were balls. Home plate umpire Ben May did not want to hear the manager’s objections. “I thought the ball was low and he said he warned me, and I don’t really take kindly to being warned,” Baker said. “So it led to the ejection.”
