Pittsburgh Pirates' Ji Man Choi, right, steps on home plate after hitting a solo home run off Houston Astros starting pitcher Framber Valdez during the second inning of a baseball game in Pittsburgh, Monday, April 10, 2023. PITTSBURGH — After the Astros’ most satisfying win of this young season, a circle of chairs surrounded a locker in the center of their clubhouse. Inside of it sat Jose Altuve.
Altuve’s injury last month in the World Baseball Classic created countless questions. Clarity seems to arrive each day. Baker settled on Chas McCormick as his leadoff hitter after eight games. “He’s staying out of the air, hitting line drives, going to right ,” Baker said. “He’s been playing very well the last few days, which is good to see. He’s been working on his game. This is his opportunity to play more and, lately, he’s been capitalizing on it.”
Dubón sought counsel from both Yordan Alvarez and Michael Brantley, who noticed the barrel of his bat dropping during his swing, preventing Dubón from staying on top of the baseball. The adjustment is minor, but does appear to be making a difference.
