After a dominant 7-1 homestand, the Astros may have more lopsided matchups looming.
Rapper Bun B throws out the first pitch before the start of a MLB game at Minute Maid Park on Thursday, July 7, 2022 in Houston. The Astros saw two sides of a terrible spectrum during this seven-game homestand. The Los Angeles Angels boast one of baseball’s worst offenses, even with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani heading it. The Kansas City Royals have the American League’s worst pitching staff, one that failed to support sizable leads in three games inside Minute Maid Park.
Against the Royals and Angels, the Astros did what elite teams are supposed to: dominate those inferior to them. They scored 25 times in four games against Royals pitching. They struck out the Angels 48 times in a three-game span, including a record-setting, 20-strikeout showing during a walk-off win on Sunday.
Houston is reaping the benefits of playing in baseball’s worst division. No other American League West team is over .500. The Astros have 16 games remaining against the Oakland A’s, the American League’s worst team at 28-56. The first is on Friday at the Coliseum. The Royals cannot pitch and are in the American League Central cellar, but their offense offered a blueprint for battling the Astros.
The Astros’ all-righty staff struggled to control lefties Andrew Benintendi and MJ Melendez atop the Royals’ order. It has not been a trend this season — lefthanded hitters have just a .207 batting average against the Astros’ staff — but it did prompt the question whether the team can survive with an all-righthanded staff.
