Astros insider: Worst-case scenario with six-man rotation taxes bullpen
VIP visitors to batting practice wear masks before a MLB game at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 in Houston. The Astros asked Héctor Neris to finish another game for their suddenly shorthanded bullpen. No American League reliever has made more appearances than Neris, the 33-year-old setup man signed this winter for more depth.
Instead, starter Cristian Javier could not finish more than five innings. Long man Seth Martinez could not relieve him due to Jake Odorizzi’s dud Monday. Martinez managed to stabilize that game with three terrific innings. Odorizzi offered only four, rendering Martinez unavailable for the next two nights. One week ago, while Astros pitching pounded both of New York’s ballclubs, the thought of a six-man rotation inspired excitement.
The six-man rotation seems here to stay. The Astros have one off day before the All-Star break. A gauntlet of 32 games in 33 days awaits them when they return. Staying in a six-man rotation is logical, but the threat of some short starts looms to throw it into upheaval.
