The Houston Astros are exploring several options for their 2025 infield, including the possibility of moving Jose Altuve to the outfield and re-signing Alex Bregman.
As the Houston Astros contemplate their infield strategies for the 2025 season, a potential free agent acquisition could lead to a shift in Jose Altuve 's position. Altuve, 34, holds the distinction of being MLB 's active leader in defensive games played at second base with 1,765, placing him 22nd all-time.
However, following the December trade of star right fielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for infielder Isaac Paredes, the Astros' outfield landscape appears to offer more flexibility. This possibility becomes even more pronounced if the Astros manage to secure a reunion with Alex Bregman. Reports emerged on Thursday from Bob Nightengale of USA Today on Twitter/X, indicating that the Astros haven't entirely ruled out the prospect of bringing Bregman back, despite acquiring Paredes and attempting to acquire Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals. Nightengale suggests that if a Bregman reunion materializes, Altuve would transition to left field, while Paredes would assume the role of second baseman. Adding another layer of complexity, Arenado exercised his no-trade clause, effectively terminating the agreed-upon deal that would have sent him to Houston. The Cardinals remain actively seeking to trade Arenado. Meanwhile, Bregman, a two-time All-Star third baseman, continues to navigate the free agent market. Later Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post echoed Nightengale's earlier report, proposing that the Astros might have the financial leeway to re-sign Bregman if they manage to trade All-Star pitcher Ryan Pressly. Pressly, 36, is entering the final year of his three-year, $42 million contract signed before the 2023 season. After serving as the Astros' primary closer for three consecutive seasons, the right-hander primarily functioned as a set-up man for Josh Hader in 2024. Pressly concluded the 2024 season with a 2-3 record and a 3.49 ERA in 59 appearances. While Nightengale reported the Astros were 'on the verge' of sending Pressly to the Chicago Cubs, multiple reports on Thursday indicated that the right-hander had yet to agree to any trade. The Astros' willingness to potentially move their most established second baseman to the outfield and the possibility of a Bregman reunion present two intriguing scenarios
