The Astros avoided a series sweep, winning 2-1 Sunday and salvaging at least one game in an otherwise depressing series in Seattle.
Seattle Mariners pitcher Paul Sewald reacts in the dugout after pitching in the top of the eighth inning of a baseball game against the Houston Astros, Sunday, May 29, 2022, in Seattle. The Astros won 2-1. SEATTLE — A line drive found grass, and baserunners began to move, a scene missing for so much of this series and season. Scoring is an adventure for these Astros, whose lineup is struggling to string good at-bats together or hit with runners in scoring position.
Maldonado’s double chased Gonzales from the game in favor of Paul Sewald. Sewald could not locate the strike zone. The Astros seized advantage, at long last accepting a scoring opportunity handed to them. Alvarez’s single allowed Maldonado’s pinch runner, Aledmys Díaz, to walk home. Houston won 2-1, salvaging a game in an otherwise depressing series in Seattle. Little about it looked pretty or arrived easily. Closer Ryan Pressly allowed three of the five Mariners he saw in the ninth inning to reach base. Bregman began a 5-4-3 double play that bailed him out.
The lineup mustered six hits Sunday but followed what has become its 2022 formula: Find enough runs to support a stalwart pitching performance. Gonzales ravaged the Astros’ aggressive approach. He needed 24 pitches to procure his first nine outs. Beginning with Bregman’s first-inning groundout, eight consecutive Houston hitters saw two pitches or fewer.
Garcia stymied Seattle with two fastballs: a four-seamer he commanded well and his trademark cutter for chase outside the strike zone. Sixty-nine of his 85 pitches were either four-seamers or cutters. He generated eight ground-ball outs and worked at a noticeably quicker pace.
