SEATTLE — He is man and not machine, even if Justin Verlander makes the latter feel feasible. Few could have envisioned a more magnificent return after two years away. Verlander expected it. He stepped into Seattle with the sport’s lowest earned-run average and WHIP. Opponents had hit just .161 against him. None had scored in 19 consecutive innings. The eight-start beginning to Verlander’s season exceeded almost every expectation. The ninth brought a sobering dose of reality. Verlander’s remarkable return from Tommy John surgery hit its first snag on a sublime evening in Seattle. The Mariners struck four home runs and scored six times against the Astros’ ageless ace, who authored one of the worst starts of his entire Houston tenure. He piloted a four-run first inning that put his pedestrian offense in a deficit it could not overcome during a 6-1 loss at T-Mobile Park. Verlander allowed six earned runs for only the third time as an Astro, a span of 83 regular-season starts. The 10 hits he surrendered were his most as an Astro. The four home runs he allowed matched a career-worst. Three arrived on the first pitch of an at-bat. Two led off innings. The carnage raised Verlander’s ERA by almost a full run, from 1.22 to 2.03. He never appeared in any discernible rhythm. He failed to command his four-seam fastball and could not harness any consistency with his slider, Verlander’s most important breaking pitch that’s been problematic all season. Two of Seattle’s four home runs came against Verlander’s slider. Seattle swung 30 times at the 47 four-seam fastballs he threw. Only three ended with whiffs. Verlander generated 12 total swings and misses while receiving eight called strikes. The poor command cratered any chance he had to salvage his evening. No team had scored more than three runs against him all season. The Mariners managed four in the first inning. Verlander’s 19-inning scoreless streak ended in inglorious fashion, during the sort of frame he hasn’t produced in this prolific post-surgery return. Verlander in his finest form is prone to home runs. He surrendered 36 en route to the 2019 American League Cy Young Award, but yielded only four in this season’s first 51 ⅔ innings. Home runs can come as a result of Verlander’s style — he thrives on fastballs up in the strike zone — but keeping them to solo shots is often his specialty. Two first-inning mistakes made it impossible. He fell behind fearsome two-hole hitter Ty France 3-1 before surrendering a sharp single up the middle. Rookie phenom Julio Rodríguez pummeled the next pitch into the right field seats, ending Verlander’s scoreless run with an opposite-field bomb. Verlander challenged the rookie with an elevated four-seam fastball. Rodríguez accepted it. A four-pitch walk to J.P. Crawford followed — Verlander’s only free pass on this putrid night. Hanging a slider to Kyle Lewis only exacerbated the mistake. Lewis launched it over both bullpens for a four-run lead Houston had no prayer of overcoming.
