The Aston Martin DB12, launched in 2023, has shown strong value retention in the used car market. This article explores the DB12's performance, design, and market performance, highlighting its evolution from the DB11 and its position in the luxury grand tourer segment.
Launched at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, the DB12 coupe marked a new era for Aston Martin , being the first model of the Lawrence Stroll era. Aston Martin boldly labelled the Gaydon-built DB12 a super tourer , aiming to redefine the grand tourer experience. The DB12 adopted the classic two-plus-two GT layout, housing a potent engine in a front/mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive configuration.
It aimed to compete with the Bentley Continental GT and, with the introduction of the Volante convertible version in August 2023, the Ferrari Roma Spider. The DB12 features a modified bonded aluminium monocoque chassis, enhancing torsional rigidity. Its design showcases an aggressive new body design with a prominent grille, and enhancements such as new suspension, electromechanical steering, and a torque-vectoring electronic rear differential. \Powered by a Mercedes-AMG-sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, the DB12's engine, tuned by Aston Martin's engineers, delivers a significant power boost. The absence of a V12 engine in the 12 marked a shift in Aston Martin's engine strategy. This engine, equipped with bigger turbochargers, enhanced cooling, and other in-house tuning modifications, generated 680 horsepower, a 34 per cent increase compared to the DB11 V8. With 590lb ft of torque and an eight-speed automatic transmission, the DB12 accelerated from 0 to 62mph in 3.6 seconds, and the Volante needed 3.7 seconds. A sportier S version, unveiled in October 2025, further improved the acceleration times. The original DB12 off the line sold for $1.6 million at auction for charity, considerably above the £185,000 retail price. \As of March 2026, used DB12s are available, but their values have generally held firm. A rebuilt car from 2023 was listed at £100,000, but the average price for DB12s on sale was above £140,000. Around 30% of the listings were Volantes, with the lowest priced at around £159,000. Depreciation over two and a half years was approximately 20% on certain models, which is commendable. The increased performance from the Aston Martin tuning process on the engine was clear, with modifications that included changes to the cam profile, the use of bigger turbos and a more efficient cooling system. The carbon fiber propshaft further complemented the powertrain. The DB12's performance capabilities were also supported by its shortened final drive ratio
