In follow-up interviews, FNSB Assembly members Brett Roterumund and Savannah Fletcher gave additional insights into a couple of their decisions as a recent special election ordinance made its way through the political process.

Published: Feb. 21, 2024 at 9:36 AM AKSTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Fairbanks North Star Borough will put on its first areawide special election in many years on May 7.

The ballot question will ask voters if they’re willing to raise the tax revenue cap by $10 million to help the borough fund the FNSB School District in the upcoming fiscal year, and Rotermund said his move sponsoring the ordinance didn’t sit well with constituents. “In my opinion, if this was going to pass, it’s best to be brought before the people, so the people can make that decision, not the assembly,” he said.

“I would like to see us take care of our end of the funding in a permanent way, in a way that has some staying power, and that is on the books, and I think we need to ask the voters for that now,” Assemblymember Scott Crass said at the Thursday meeting. The borough has $13 million in lapsed funds it could use to increase its local contribution to the school district for this upcoming fiscal year.

“Either way, I was in support of it, clearly from my votes, having it either be held May 7 or in October,” she said. She added, “But I can also understand reasonings to have it to solve a problem as soon as you possibly can when we are facing fiscal challenges.”
