Abstract artist Robert Motherwell draws 'As Fast as the Mind Itself' at the Menil
Motherwell understood that the rational mind has limits. And that abstract art doesn't necessarily mean the artist has no subject — in Motherwell's case, he simply preferred to happen across his subject organically.
"He couldn't be part of the war because he had asthma, and wondered what his role should have been," Kopp shares. But it was 1948, the year Motherwell drew what is now titled"Elegy to the Spanish Republic No. 1" that is regarded as his breakthrough and most generative work. By then he'd worked for several publications and journals and had been named editor of"Possibilities," an avant-garde magazine.
By 1958, Motherwell met and married his third wife, abstract painter Helen Frankenthaler who was born into similar wealth. The newlyweds hosted well-attended parties and were dubbed the"golden couple" by their peers. Around this time, Kopp says Motherwell began"letting go.""Summertime in Italy" is one of the artist's largest works on paper and unmistakably optimistic."He loved the oil aura effect and let the materials spread and be themselves.
