I am an author, independent researcher and speaker exploring innovation, information technology trends and markets. I served as co-chair of the 2023 AI Summit in New York, as well as the 2021 and 2022 Summits. I regularly contribute to Harvard Business Review on AI topics.
When generative AI first came on the public scene a couple of years back, it was hard to contain peoples’ excitement about its possibilities. Now, a somewhat cooler reality has set in — AI is a powerful tool, but also capable of great misuse and abuse. Oh, and it’s often more expensive to implement than the problems it’s designed to solve.
The consensus among the industry leaders and thinkers we queried is that AI is indeed a powerful tool, but needs to be approached with clear-headed thinking. For instance, getting to high-functioning AI will require a significant information technology infrastructure overhaul, requiring “massive investments in GPU and datacenter infrastructure,” Lee said.
Robotics is another area where AI is not well-developed, Allen continued. “AI control of robotics still appears to be in its early stages,” he said. “The ability for AI to safely understand and navigate complex physical environments has been ‘just around the corner’ for years.” Always keep the human in the loop, Lee urged. “For example, AI might be a great research assistant as long as the human user expects rough drafts and is prepared for multiple rounds of human review and revision.”
