A Seoul-based biotech startup, Artblood, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in veterinary medicine by successfully producing the world's first in vitro dog blood. This innovation holds immense potential for addressing blood supply shortages in animal healthcare.
Seoul-based bio startup, Artblood, has been working to advance veterinary medicine and biomedical research . It specialized in the development of cell-based artificial blood production. Recently, it achieved a major milestone: the world’s first successful in vitro production of dog blood . Scientists at Artblood collaborated with Hanyang University and Gyeongsang National University for this milestone.
The successful creation of lab-grown dog blood provides a promising solution for veterinary medicine, offering a reliable and ethical blood supply for transfusions. Reportedly, researcher Park Seong-ah presented the findings at the CELL BIO 2024 international conference in San Diego.In-vitro blood production is a cutting-edge field in biomedical research that involves cultivating blood cells outside of a living organism. This innovative approach, primarily explored for human medical applications, is now extending its reach to animal health. This new research involved the successful cultivation of dog red blood cells in a laboratory setting. The team created red blood cells using dog peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PB MNCs). These are a type of white blood cell found inBoth human and dog-derived cytokines were used to create the optimal environment for blood cell growth. Moreover, the cell markers — found on the surface of cells — enabled the differentiation of PB MNCs into red blood cells. “In an appropriate medium environment, the immature red blood cells of dogs proliferated, reaching maximum expansion on the 17th day, and the production of red blood cells was completed,” Park explained. The lab-grown red blood cells are smaller than human ones but have a similar shape and carry oxygen just as well as natural dog blood.for dog transfusions relies on donations from other dogs. This approach has several limitations. For instance, there is a limited number of suitable donor dogs available, which can lead to shortage
