Michelle Mann OZARK-When Ben Baker was elected to a third term in Dale County Schools’ top leadership position this month, the former Ariton High School history teacher made history as the county’s first third term and longest serving superintendent.
“My goal in life, my dream was to be the history teacher at Ariton High School and I got to live my dream,” the son of Jeanette Baker and the late Kenneth Baker said. “I tell kids all the time that you have to have a goal—but when you meet that goal, you have to set a bigger one. Climate and culture are keyThe key to successful schools is “climate and culture,” Baker said. “You create a climate and culture where kids want to come and where parents want to send their kids. Part of the climate and culture includes band programs and bringing art and music back to the schools, starting at the elementary level. Golf, track and field, and bass teams have been added to the athletics arena.
Baker also initiated a student advisory board which meets regularly with him. “I give them an open mic,” he said.
