Two brush fires erupted in San Diego within a week, forcing evacuations and raising concerns about residents' and firefighters' safety. The Friars Fire near Fashion Valley Mall and the Center Fire/Bernardo Fire in Rancho Bernardo both sparked investigations leading to arrests.

Two brush fires erupted in San Diego within a week, prompting evacuations and raising concerns about the safety of residents and firefighters. The first fire, dubbed the Friars Fire, broke out on January 21st near Fashion Valley Mall in Mission Valley. Flames quickly raced up a hillside towards homes, prompting evacuation orders and forcing the closure of the Linda Vista campus and Linda Vista Innovation Center of the San Diego County Office of Education.

The fire charred an estimated 15-20 acres before firefighters brought it under control. Although relatively small, the fire destroyed a condo and damaged at least one apartment, displacing a family of three. Two individuals, a resident and a firefighter, suffered minor injuries during the firefighting operation. The second fire, known as the Center Fire or Bernardo Fire, ignited on January 22nd near Bernardo Center Drive and Camino del Norte in Rancho Bernardo. This fire grew to 7 acres before firefighters gained containment. Evacuation orders were issued for nearby homes and schools, including RB Kinder Care, Turtleback Elementary School, and Rolling Hills Elementary, which saw students sheltering in place or evacuated to other campuses. One person sustained burn injuries in this fire and was transported to a hospital.Authorities have made arrests in connection with both fires, according to San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl. He spoke to NBC 7, stating that investigations are ongoing. These incidents highlight the swift and destructive nature of brush fires, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and community vigilance during wildfire season
