Don Cheadle's highly anticipated Armor Wars project, originally planned as a Disney+ series, has faced significant delays and uncertainty. The film, which was to feature Cheadle reprising his role as Colonel James Rhodes, has been shrouded in secrecy since its announcement several years ago. While initial reports cited budgetary constraints as the reason for the shift from series to film, recent comments from former Marvel producer Nate Moore suggest a more complex situation. Moore, who left the studio after 14 years, stated that the project's status remains unclear and that Marvel is being more selective about its releases to ensure quality.
Don Cheadle , an MCU veteran for over a decade after taking over the role of Colonel James Rhodes from Terrence Howard in Iron Man 2, was met with immense fan excitement when it was announced several years ago that he would lead Armor Wars , initially envisioned as a Disney+ series. However, the project has encountered significant turbulence, shifting from a show to a movie without substantial updates in recent years.
In 2022, Nate Moore, then a Marvel producer, cited budgetary constraints as the reason for the change. During a recent interview with Collider to promote Captain America: Brave New World, Moore offered a more perplexing update on the film's status. 'You know, that’s not my project, to be honest,' Moore stated. 'But, I do know, as Marvel continues to navigate this phase, we want to ensure whatever we're creating is exceptional. So that means we've had to slow down some things that were at the forefront. It doesn't mean we'll never make it, but it does mean we just have to be a little more deliberate so that each time out, audiences are guaranteed quality.' Moore's departure from Marvel Studios after 14 years coincided with the shift in Armor Wars' development. Although he was reportedly involved with the project before leaving, it is no longer his responsibility. Moore, however, will remain a producer on Black Panther 3, an upcoming MCU film yet to be officially announced, with Denzel Washington hinting at his potential involvement. Moore recently expressed his desire to see Washington join the MCU, but confirmed that casting for the film has not yet commenced. Don Cheadle's most recent MCU project, Secret Invasion, proved to be highly controversial, despite its focus on a supporting role, typically alongside Tony Stark. The 2023 series garnered dismal reviews, scoring 53% from critics and 42% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. A significant plot twist revealed that Rhodey had been a Skrull since his accident in Captain America: Civil War, infuriating many Marvel fans. This decision drew criticism as it meant the genuine Rhodey was absent from pivotal moments in the MCU, including Tony's death, his funeral, his guidance to Sam Wilson in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the fights against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Armor Wars currently lacks an official release date and there is no clarity on when or if production will commence. Stay tuned to Collider for further updates on the project.
