Captain Rex as seen in the Ahsoka series, edited over the clone army standing at attention.

Captain Rex’s armor is unlike any other clone trooper’s in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and showrunner Dave Filoni gave it an interesting explanation. In Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, clone troopers are introduced with Phase 1 armor, which resembles both their sinister successors – Imperial stormtroopers – and the Mandalorian armor of their genetic template – Jango Fett.

Quick Links Captain Rex's Unique Armor Was Explained 14 Years Ago Dave Filoni revealed in an interview with IGN that, regardless of which Phase of clone trooper armor was actually better, Captain Rex preferred the first iteration. Rather than accepting an entirely new suit of armor, Rex thus crafts something that's more durable and comfortable for himself, and he also gets to hang on to the old memories associated with his original armor. This not only enhances his character, marking him as a leader who adapts and moves on yet doesn't forget what they've lost, but it also makes him stand out from any other clone.

While both versions of clone trooper armor had their own built-in oxygen supplies in the original Legends continuity, the modern canon establishes that this is only the case for Phase 1 armor. The modern canon’s Phase 2 armor requires a separate oxygen tank for use in space.
