We shouldn’t leave defense of our children to janitors, secretaries, cafeteria workers and school nurses.
Askey is right: the last thing we need is more guns in schools. We need fewer guns everywhere. He is right to argue against encouraging teachers and staff to bring weapons into classrooms. That would only increase the danger for everyone. It would only increase the chance a kid could get killed in an accidental discharge. And such legislation risks having armed school personnel accidentally killed by police responding to an active shooter.
Where will a teacher, nurse or school janitor find the time for to devote hours each week to weapons and active shooter training? Talk to any teacher. They don’t have enough time in the day as it is. Now, we want to add shooting and urban warfare to their list of duties? Activists join Senate Democrats outside the Capitol to demand action on gun control legislation after a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school this week, in Washington, Thursday, May 26, 2022. Your children are scared. They need to know they can go to school and learn in safety. You need to know they will come home at the end of the day, do their homework, and go to bed.
