Richard Albert Viscarra Jr., 42, was shot and killed by an Atascosa County deputy as he was approaching with a knife. He had threatened suicide by cop.

An Atascosa County deputy killed a knife-wielding man who reportedly threatened suicide by cop. The incident began when a deputy responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at a residence on North Fifth Street in the Royal Oaks subdivision between Rossville and Somerset around 11:15 p.m. Saturday. Sheriff David Soward said in a news release that the deputy who went to the home first spoke with the woman who called 911 for a few moments on the porch.

Man found shot dead after crashing his vehicle on Northwest Side, police say Deputies have been to the home for similar calls in the past. Viscarra came to the door as they talked, and the deputy asked him to step outside. Viscarra reportedly grabbed a large butcher knife and began advancing toward the deputy, ignoring repeated commands to stop and put the knife down. Soward said Viscarra walked down the steps and aggressively held the knife, stepping toward the deputy.
